DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Level of envenomations
Grade 1: Slight
Symptoms and signs
-Pain at the sting site
-Local paresthesia
-Nasal drip
Age Group: Any age
Recomended Treatment: 1 dose Alacramyn intravenous (i.v.).
Grade 2: Moderate
Symptoms and signs
-Those of the Slight syndrome plus:
-Sialorrhea (drooling or excessive salivation),
-General paresthesia (numbness or tingling),
-Gastric hyperdistension,
-Lingual fasciculations (abnormal movements of the tongue),
-Disnea,
-Back pain.
Recommended Treatment: Under 15 years old 2 doses Alacramyn i.v.
Older than 15, 1 dose Alacramyn i.v.
Grade 3: Severe
Symptoms and signs:
-Those of Moderate syndrome plus:
-Sensation of “thick-tongue”, difficulty swallowing,
-Nystagmus (twitching of the eyes),
-Emprosthotonic and opisthitonic spasms (convulsions),
-Vomit (throwing up),
-Ataxic walking (uncoordinated, dizzy),
-Temporary blindness,
-Hypertension (high blood pressure),
-Priapism (penile erection) in males, vaginal discomfort in females,
-Pulmonary edema,
-Cardiac failure.
Recommended Treatment: Under 15 years old 3 doses Alacramyn i.v.
Older than 15, 2 doses Alacramyn i.v.
